When Illinois was found to be violating the Constitution by its blanket denial of gun rights, including possession, to law-abiding citizens the government in that state adopted a new law which would permit qualified persons (within reason) to obtain concealed carry permits. As you might imagine many liberals fretted over the ensuing crime wave to follow. Many chiefs of police worried about the problems they would have when encountering someone with a concealed weapon. As if this doesn't already happen a lot in most of the major and not so major cities in Illinois. But the law has been enacted, and is operating.
And guess what?
None of the predictions by the panty-knotted left have been realized.
As it turns out something impressive happens when responsible and law-abiding people are allowed the most personal liberty possible: Nothing much bad, and several things good. Criminals aren't often going to seek out a permit to carry a weapon which is already illegal for them to possess, and so they tend to not apply and get on the LE radar screens. And people with no need or desire to have a weapon, whether because of their location or job or perhaps their own realization it's not for them, don't apply either. There can be no doubt that some people who do apply should not get a permit, and might (this is the government after all performing a function, and so it's sure to be very flawed), but these people could illegally obtain and carry a firearm now. Or legally obtain a firearm and illegally carry it.
Citizens allowed to act like adults will far more often than not meet the challenge. Citizens treated as incompetent dopes or addled teens or helpless infants very often accept, and meet, that challenge as well. I prefer an America of adults. Liberal politicians, pundits, and prognosticators were all wrong about what would happen. It's not the wild west. It's not the crime-riddled precincts of Chicago either. It's just normal and regular people trying to live their lives without screwing anyone over, or being screwed over themselves.
There is still work to be done though. Many of the applications are denied and on appeal are granted, which means there are still some bureaucrats who fail to appreciate their job properly.
Anyhow, chalk one up for the anti-left/pro-liberty side.
